So last night, I was reading the newspaper. One of the stories on the front page was about how bad the quality of education is here in the philippines. get this. according to the article, a lot of teacher in ARMM were only armed with English skills and proficiencies equivalent to that of a Grade 3 student. how alarming is that? furthermore, im also writing about philippine education in my argumentative research paper for english. i have seen some even more alarming data while i was researching for my paper. for instance, did you know that the average math proficiency of a filipino high school student in the public schools is only 39.05%? that certainly is very low especially when you consider that the passing rate is 75%.

But you know what really pissed me off? the headline of yesterday's paper was about how the political parties are already planning who they will field as presidential candidates for the 2010 presidential elections. 2008 just started and now they're already thinking about 2010. i think that's the problem with our political system. we are perennially in election season. as soon as one election ends, politicians already start campaigning for the next one albeit discreetly. they forget about the task at hand of trying to improve the quality of living of their constituents.

why dont you guys just focus on the other more important needs of filipinos? one of which is education. stop thinking about how you can win the next election. focus on the present. how dare you call yourselves public servants when all you busy yourself with is the next election.

Aaaaaaand, well, honestly, the education here is not far from the education there. To be honest, ang laki ng lamang nating mga Pilipino pag dating sa katalinuhan.

I attended a seminar once and it was said there that Philippine Science High School, which is supposed to be the country's leading school in terms of Math and Science proficiency, only performs marginally at the level of the average (read: so-so) Singaporean or Korean high schools. That's sad, considering that many if not most of our schools are below the level of PSHS.

Blaming our leaders is perhaps the easiest thing to do, but what can we do as regular people to alleviate this problem? (Perhaps you can answer this in your research paper harharhar)

I bet you heard about most schools cancelling classes on the first day back from Christmas vacation because a lot of teachers and students failed to show up.
